Gummy Bear Breast Implants
The rage in the US today is the “Gummy Bear “ breast implants. Breast augmentation has seen a paradigm shift since the moratorium on silicon implants since the late 80’s. From the saline implants which were the only US FDA approved implants and largely popular until 2004/5 when the next gen silicon cohesive gel implants arrived on the scene.
We were instrumental in bringing the cohesive line of implants(Mentor) to India as soon as the US FDA approval came.
We have been exclusively using the cohesive line of silicon implants since 2004. The rise in popularity of these implants were followed by the falling out of favour of the saline implants. Although the safety profile of the saline implants was unquestioned, it had a tendency to deflate and have a rippling effect and some people reported sloshing.
The so called gummy bear implants refers to a more cohesive gel implant ( cohesive III) with a thick shell and having an Anatomic form ( Tear drop). We were the first users of these implants in India and continue to use them selectively. Everything comes with a price and predictively the cost of these implants are over 2 times the cost of normal cohesive gel implants. The surgeon has to be extremely skilled and experienced as selection of the size is critical and surgically placement has to be precise as the top end of the implant being narrower than the base can rotate to the right or left if improperly placed.
